Accident & Emergency Room and Operating Theatres @ Rand Memorial Press Statement (General)

testThe Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) Bahamas has completed a series of major upgrades to the Rand Memorial Hospital in Grand Bahama, chief of which are the renovations of the Accident and Emergency Room and the construction of state of the art Operating Theatres at a cost of over 12 Million dollars.   These new facilities were officially declared open by Prime Minister Ingraham on March 21st of this year.

Renovation of the Accident and Emergency Room commenced August 2010 and was completed December 2011.  The renovations comprise an expansion of the previous facilities from 3900 to 8200 sq. ft.  Services commenced in the Accident/Emergency & Urgent Care Centre on March 1, 2012; the new A&E facilities include:

  • Trauma Bay to accommodate two critically ill patients
  • Six bed Treatment Bay with one bed modified to accommodate required isolation
  • Five exam rooms including one exam room for gynaecological cases
  • Treatment Room
  • Asthama Bay that can accommodate four patients
  • Doctors & Nurses offices
  • Psychiatric Holding Room
  • Staff Lounge
  • Waiting Room to accommodate at least 55 persons
  • Staff and Patient bathrooms including facilities for disabled patients
  • Specialized Security Screening area
  • Handicap ramps
  • Secured Ambulance Emergency Area
  • Upgraded parking for staff

Construction of the Operating Theatre Suites at the Rand Memorial Hospital began in Jan 2011 and was completed by February 2012; having increased in size from 3500 to 8500 sq. ft.  Services commenced in the Operating Theatre on March 26, 2012; these improved Theatre facilities include:

  • Two Class C Operating Theatres
  • One Class B Minor Procedure/Endoscopy Theatre
  • One Induction Room

The Operating Theatres at Rand Memorial Hospital have a capacity of three major cases per day in each suite and are treating an average of 35 – 38 cases per week.

These renovations and upgrades mark the most significant capital investment in the Rand Memorial Hospital and Grand Bahama Health Services since its construction.
