Student Training & Development

The Training, Education & Development Unit facilitates opportunities for high school students to be exposed to professional careers in healthcare.

 i.  On-The-Job Training

The On-The-Job Training for high school students is coordinated in conjunction with the Bahamas Ministry of Education.  Senior high school students of Grade 12 are selected based on their core subject’s enrolment at the various schools, private and public.  They participate in an orientation session and are then placed in departments based on their career goals.  Students are evaluated by the department heads on evaluation forms provided by the respective schools.

 ii.    Summer Job Employment

The Bahamas Government has implemented the Summer Job Employment initiative with the support of all Government departments and agencies.  The Public Hospitals Authority’s institutions and agencies, including Grand Bahama Health Services, participate in this exercise.

Students from age 15 to college level are accepted into the programme.  They are expected to have successfully attained five or more Bahamas Junior Certificates (BJC), or two or more Bahamas General Certificates of Education (BGCSE), or be currently enrolled in a college programme of study.  Documentary evidence of the qualifications must be presented with the completed application along with a photo, copies of birth certificate or passport and National Insurance card.

Based on availability of department needs, students are placed in areas that match their intended career of choice.
